MICHELLE BURGESS ATELIER

ABOUT

Je m'appelle Michelle

I am a painter living in the wonderful medieval town of Avallon, in Burgundy.I was born in New Zealand and have also lived in America, Australia and Scotland. I started painting because after moving, I sorely missed my friends and thought to keep in touch by painting their portraits, trying to capture their unique character. I'm largely self-taught and as you will see, my early paintings were sheer acts of will - but with practice we all improve.
These days I specialise in portraits, including portraits of animals, but also enjoy painting landscapes and still life. I began using acrylic and now use oil paint and soft pastels, and also charcoal for portraits and life drawings.Certainly after the advent of photography and then selfies, the 'business' of portrait painting has diminished. And yet there are still so many opportunities - cherished faces and favourite scenes - whereas a painting can be more intentional and more magical. A unique and precious gift.

I am very happy to take painting commissions. Please use 'Contact me' to get in touch. Also make sure to go to the bottom of my website and enter your email to subscribe to updates on my work, exhibitions and a blog about our life here in lovely Avallon.

In my spare time I'm enjoying exploring Burgundy with my husband and this year we are creating an artist's retreat in our terraced gardens.

À bientôt!
